A while back i decided to go to a creative writing class but now that i think about it....a while back is like 5 years ago --SHOCK HORROR--TIME is not on my side. I had a really funny teacher who just loved to chat away and he always told you the same story at some point ( i love when people do that but only when they sound passionate). Anyways, he was well read...always recommending books and i took him up on these recommendations on more than one occasion mind, which led to one of my most favourite reads for a long time.
Here's the thing. The story is supposedly aimed at teenagers and those years have long gone....i say long but i guess to some that's like centuries (HAHAHAHA)---the fact that I'm mocking someones age probably shows why this trilogy appealed to me. But a great story isn't age discriminative--RIGHT :|
The recommendation he made all those years ago was His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman and what a fabulous read!!!! I guess that will totally depend if you love fantasy type fiction full of magic and that kind of thing (watching The Golden Compass just isn't cutting it). I finished the whole trilogy in a week...yes, yes, i hardly went out....it was winter, i had cup on top of cup of tea and my duvet and the magical world of Lyra Belacqua which unfolds through the three books. Funnily enough the first book was called Northern Lights and that reminded me of good old times visiting Amsterdam:).
I forgot the point of the post for a second or two----so, today i did something i've never done before and i've booked a ticket to go and see Part 1 of His Dark Materials at the theatre---ALONE!!!!! Now this is either a sign that i'm getting old or that i'm a sad loser or maybe both----a sad old loser :) I thought i'm going to do something on my own for a change and i've booked my ticket to go and see this on the evening before my birthday. I didn't book the ticket to see part 2--yet---in case i think it's RUBBISH but i'm hoping it's great and forget what the critics say ( you can always pay someone enough to say something good)!!! Now i just found out it's 3 hours long---OMG---it better be FANTASTIC or i'll die the night before my birthday.
